The number and format of interviews that you'll go through will be personalized to your skillset and the type of role that you're looking for. We want to give everyone the best chance at representing their abilities. Everyone starts with one or two phone interviews, and if there is a mutual fit, we'll invite you to meet more of the team over virtual interviews.

We hire many kinds of engineers, so we've structured our interview process around the engineering competencies that we value most.

Phone Interviews

The interview process begins with a phone interview to talk about your background, experiences, and interest in Mysten Labs, typically lasting 45 minutes.

You should be prepared to talk about your background, experiences, and interest in 

Mysten Labs.

If you’re interviewing for an engineering role, you’ll also have an in-depth conversation into your technical expertise. Every engineer is different, whether you specialize in distributed systems, or SDK design, we expect every candidate to be able to display their expertise.

Team Interviews

Research

A common theme throughout your interviews will be questions related to what we’re building at Mysten. You’ll find blogs and other resources on our website, as well as other easily accessible information across the web such as  Mysten Labs’ GitHub, Sui.io, Sui Developer Portal, and more. You’ll want to dedicate a good portion of your interview preparation reading up on these topics.

We are looking for uniquely talented individuals who are innovative, focused and ambitious. “Everyone carries a box here” so we’re focused on hiring people who want to build for the greater good of Mysten, not for specific teams or individuals.

Your biggest accomplishments

We’re focused on making step change advancements in our industry. We’ll be asking you questions about how you’ve executed, challenged yourself, motivated others, and made judgments—as well as where you've failed in the past.

What you are passionate about

We want to know what motivates the people we meet. There’s no wrong answer here; we just want to see you get fired up about something you love.

Most of our team interviews for full-time employees consist of four separate 45 minute meetings. The interviews are meant to give us a cross-functional view of your breadth and depth of experience and will take form differently if you’re a Cryptographer, Distributed Systems Engineer and so on.

Coding

You’ll be assessed on how you solved the problem as well as the structure and style of your code. We’re interested in your ability to write code that is efficient, effective, easy to read, maintain and upgrade. One of the core facets of a good coding interview is the ability to translate a conceptual algorithmic solution into the code that actually implements it.

Systems Design

This interview may be systems, crypto, or front-end focused depending upon the specific position for which you are interviewing. We’re looking for the ability to tackle technical challenges that are open-ended in nature, with multiple possible solutions that will incur different trade-offs.

Systems Walkthrough

In this interview, you become the teacher. We want to use this time for you to do a deep dive into a project that you led or had significant participation in to provide the interviewer with confidence that you can understand some of the challenges we face:

  • Introducing a new solution to an existing large code base

  • Building a complex system with multiple parts from scratch

  • Solving a problem with limited time and resources in which "perfect" is unattainable

  • Enabling a workflow for which no ideal solution exists

In this interview, we’ll be focused on taking a deeper look into your background, what you’re passionate about, and what kind of impact you want to make. This interview typically deep dives into other cross-functional aspects of your area of expertise. Sometimes this assessment will focus on a project that you have led or had significant participation in that can provide the interviewer with confidence that you can understand some of the challenges you face in your area of expertise.
